Comerica Scholars Program

Through the Comerica Charitable Fund endowment, the Academic Success Center is developing a leadership and retention program for the Detroit Compact Scholars and the Wade McCree students.

Vision and Mission
The vision of the Comerica Scholars and Leadership Fellow Program is to be a national model for talented students to excel in academics, leadership, and service learning in a large urban university. The mission is to engage and maximize the academic talents of the Comerica Scholars throughout their learning experience. The Comerica Scholars will be exposed to the best that Wayne State University has to offer. The program outcomes are for students to be academically successful, have positive connections with faculty, staff and the university community, and graduate.

About the Program
The program is designed to enhance and build on the students’ demonstrated high excellence and transition those skills to a post-secondary learning environment. The program activities are based on a student developmental model and span four years. Research emphasizes that the first year is the foundation for graduation and must provide students an active learning environment , first year experience transition courses and connections with faculty, advisors, and campus organizations . As Tinto (2006) noted, effective programs that foster learning community allow students the opportunity to experience the importance of an educational community, encourages greater student engagement in the learning process.
