Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Academic Success Center?

The Academic Success Center offers academic assistance to students. In addition to tutoring and supplemental instruction, students can also receive study skills counseling from one of our Learning Specialists. The Academic Success Center provides a Technology Lab with software for student use. Students can take advantage of the Learning Video Library and Study Skills Lab.

2. What services do you offer?

We offer these main services: tutoring, supplemental instruction, study skills counseling, and customized workshops. We have a learning video library where you can reserve a room to view self-help learning videos. Customized workshops include managing your time, salvaging the semester, handling test anxiety and a host of other workshops.

We also house the Comerica Scholars program that serves Detroit Compact, Wade McCree, and UPA scholarship students.

3. What type of software do you have in your technology lab?

We have multi-media computers and computer software to improve your basic reading, writing, and math skills.

4. Can you help me prepare for tests?

If you would like to work on test taking strategies or test anxiety, please submit a Request for Study Skills Counseling form.  A staff member will contact you within three business days. Otherwise, consult our workshop calendar for test related topics.

5. What type of workshops do you offer?

Popular workshop topics include Reading Comprehension, Essay Exams, Research Papers, Career Planning, Test Taking Skills and Concentration/Stress/Memory. Our workshop calendar changes each semester, so please check our workshop schedule frequently.

6. What is Study Skills Counseling?

Students work on improving up to three study skill areas with a learning specialist. Through Study Skills Counseling, you will learn how you learn best and receive tips aimed at improving other acadamic areas that you identify. To request services, please complete and submit our request form.

7. Which classes do you tutor?

The classes supported in any given semester are subject to change. Please refer to our walk-in tutoring schedule for current information.   Generally, we deal with most of the sciences including Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Psychology and Computer Science. Several languages such as Spanish, French and German are tutored within our center. We offer tutoring in other classes such as Marketing, Statistics and Accounting. If you need assistance in a course not listed, please contact the Tutoring Coordinator.

8. Do I have to meet with the same Tutor each week?

No, you do not have to meet with the same Tutor. Consult the walk-in tutoring schedule for available Tutors and courses supported.

9. Do you have a place for me to study?

We have study rooms that can be used for individual or group study. Please see the front desk for details.

10. What about SI sessions? What are they?

SI sessions are informal group study sessions focused on helping students learn to be successful in high-risk courses at no cost. Students engage in discussions about relevant subject matter. Students may attend SI sessions and participate on a voluntary basis.

11. How much does tutoring cost?

Tutoring is absolutely free. All tutoring services are free to Wayne State students.

12. Do you offer help with reading?

We offer free courses that help students with college level reading. Some of the classes include speed reading, textbook reading, and vocabulary enrichment. See our list of other courses.
